What is dutasteride used for?

Dutasteride is primarily used for two main purposes:

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Dutasteride is FDA-approved and widely used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition characterized by an enlarged prostate gland in aging men. It works by reducing the size of the prostate gland, improving urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, and the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. Dutasteride helps alleviate symptoms and may reduce the risk of urinary retention or the need for surgery related to BPH.

Androgenetic Alopecia (Male Pattern Hair Loss): Though not officially approved for this purpose in all countries, dutasteride has been used off-label to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It's believed to slow down hair loss progression by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair follicle miniaturization. By reducing DHT levels, dutasteride may promote hair regrowth in some individuals with male pattern baldness.
