Product Introduction

Description

Finasteride is a medication primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness. It belongs to a class of drugs known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, which work by blocking the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone implicated in the development of BPH and hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride helps shrink the prostate gland in men with BPH, relieving symptoms such as urinary urgency, frequency, and weak urinary stream.

In addition to its efficacy in managing BPH, finasteride is widely prescribed for the treatment of male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. By inhibiting the production of DHT, finasteride slows down hair loss and promotes hair regrowth in men with this condition. It is typically taken orally in tablet form, with noticeable improvements in hair growth often observed within three to six months of starting treatment. However, the benefits of finasteride for hair loss are limited to the duration of its use, and discontinuation may result in the gradual return of hair loss.

While finasteride is generally well-tolerated, it may cause side effects in some individuals. Common adverse reactions include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased ejaculate volume. Additionally, there have been reports of persistent sexual side effects even after discontinuation of finasteride, although these occurrences are rare. Other less common side effects may include breast tenderness or enlargement and allergic reactions. It is important for individuals considering finasteride therapy to discuss potential risks and benefits with their healthcare provider to make an informed decision regarding treatment.

How does Finastride work?

Finasteride is a medication primarily used to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is the enlargement of the prostate gland. It works by targeting the body's conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to hair loss and prostate enlargement.

Mechanism of Action:

Inhibition of 5-alpha reductase:

Finasteride works by inhibiting an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT.

Reduction in DHT levels:

By blocking the conversion, finasteride reduces the levels of DHT in the body. DHT is known to contribute to both hair follicle miniaturization (which leads to hair loss) and the enlargement of the prostate.

Impact on Hair Loss:

Lowering DHT levels helps to slow down hair loss and, in some cases, promote hair regrowth in men suffering from male pattern baldness.

Impact on BPH:

By reducing DHT levels, finasteride can shrink the enlarged prostate and relieve symptoms of BPH such as difficulty in urination, frequent urination, or weak urine flow.

Key Uses:

Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia): Finasteride helps reduce hair loss and can promote regrowth in some men.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): It helps improve urinary symptoms related to an enlarged prostate.

How effective is finasteride in treating hair loss?

Most studies show that finasteride is a highly effective drug for treating androgenic alopecia (also known as male pattern baldness) in men. One study found that finasteride stopped hair loss in the following people:

●70% of men have temple hair loss
●83% of men suffer from hair loss on the top of their head
Over 5 years of using finasteride, 90% of men with male pattern baldness maintained or improved hair growth by taking finasteride daily.

Decreasing your finasteride intake to three times per week to reduce the risk of side effects, such as erectile dysfunction associated with finasteride, may reduce the effectiveness of the drug.

Most men take oral finasteride to control hair loss. But there are some promising signs that topical finasteride can also work and have fewer side effects than oral Propecia. This condition may become more common as more evidence shows the efficacy of topical finasteride.

However, finasteride only works on scalp hair. Finasteride is not effective on beards and body hair.

Is finasteride the most effective hair loss treatment?

Finasteride is the most commonly used hair loss treatment. But considering the benefits and risks, is it the most effective? Is Finasteride Worth It?

Multiple studies have found that another 5α-reductase inhibitor, dutasteride, is actually more effective than finasteride. Dutasteride blocks three types of 5α reductase, while finasteride blocks only two.

Dutasteride is also three times more potent than finasteride in blocking the type 2 enzyme. Therefore, Dutasteride prevents more testosterone from being converted into dihydrotestosterone, resulting in better results.

Dutasteride is stronger than finasteride and is an off-label use for hair loss treatment (dutasteride is often used to treat enlarged prostate). Therefore, people do not always need to take dutasteride to reduce hair loss. Finasteride is more likely to be prescribed if results are not achieved.
Minoxidil is another popular hair loss treatment. It stimulates blood flow to the scalp, thereby promoting hair growth. It is better suited to treating a wider range of causes of hair loss than finasteride. However, minoxidil tends to be less effective than finasteride for male pattern baldness.

Adverse reactions

This product is generally well tolerated, and adverse reactions are usually mild, and generally do not require discontinuation of treatment.
The safety of finasteride in the treatment of alopecia was evaluated in a series of clinical studies involving more than 3,200 male patients. In three 12-month, multi-center, placebo-controlled, double-blind studies, the safety of this product was similar to that of placebo. 1.7% of the 945 male patients treated with this product discontinued treatment due to adverse reactions, while 2.1% of the 934 male patients treated with placebo discontinued treatment due to adverse reactions.
In these studies, ≥1% of male patients treated with this product experienced the following medication-related adverse reactions: decreased libido (1.8% for this product, 1.3% for placebo) and impotence (1.3% for this product, 0.7% for placebo). In addition, 0.8% of male patients treated with this product experienced decreased ejaculation volume, compared with 0.4% in the placebo control group. These adverse reactions disappeared after discontinuation of this product, and many patients also had these adverse reactions disappear on their own during continued medication. In another study, the effect of this product on ejaculation volume was tested and found to be no different from placebo.
In patients who used this product for 5 years, the incidence of the above adverse reactions was reduced to ≤0.3%.
Adverse events reported after marketing are as follows: abnormal ejaculation, breast tenderness and enlargement, allergic reactions (including rash, itching, urticaria and lip swelling) and testicular pain.

Contraindications

This product is contraindicated for
Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant (see [Pregnant and lactating women])
People who are allergic to any of the ingredients of this product
This product is not suitable for women and children.

Precautions

In clinical studies conducted on men aged 18 to 41 years, serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) decreased from a baseline level of 0.7ng/ml to 0.5ng/ml after 12 months of use of this product. When this product is used to treat elderly male baldness patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), it must be considered that the prostate-specific antigen level will decrease by about 50%.
During the use of this product, if any adverse events and/or adverse reactions occur, please consult a doctor.
If you are using other medicines at the same time, please inform your doctor.
Keep out of reach of children.

Use in pregnant and lactating women

This product is contraindicated for pregnant women or women who may become pregnant.
Because type II 5α-reductase inhibitors inhibit the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone in certain tissues, such inhibitors (including finasteride) can cause malformation of the external genitalia of male fetuses if used in pregnant women.
Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should not touch broken finasteride tablets. Because the drug may be absorbed and then cause harm to the male fetus. The intact tablets have an outer coating to prevent contact with the active ingredients of the drug during normal handling.
Lactating women
This product is not suitable for women.
It is not known whether finasteride is secreted in human milk.
