How Does Kisspeptin-10 Work?

Kisspeptin-10 is a very important peptide in the human endocrine system, and it holds influence primarily through interaction with the Kiss1 receptor, which is a protein-coupled receptor in critical areas of the brain including the hypothalamus.

The Kisspeptin-10 interaction is one of the essential components needed for the activation of the process responsible for secreting GnRH, which then travels the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis to the pituitary gland itself, taking the role of stimulating the release of two important hormones.2

The two hormones released are the Luteinizing Hormone, LH, and the Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, FSH, both of which are essential elements of the gonadal function regulation processes, including ovulation and spermatogenesis.

LH and FSH are instrumental in the production and release of the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen, both of which are core components of human sexual development and reproductive function.

The hormonal cascade created by the Kisspeptin, LH, and FSH interaction not only facilitates and triggers the onset of puberty, but it's also responsible for helping to maintain ongoing fertility and sexual behavior regulation.

The functionality of Kisspeptin-10 is also thought to stretch beyond its core role in reproductive health and into the appetite regulation and metabolic process space, making it a possible peptide of interest for metabolic and energy expenditure research as well.

Additionally, some research shows that Kisspeptin-10 may also have some neuroprotective properties, influencing mood and even playing a possible role in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.
